United States President Donald Trump on July 14 said that India and Pakistan would have engaged in a nuclear war if the May escalation had continued for another week. He said this while in a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the White House, where he was joined by Vice-President JD Vance and other senior officials.

He said that the United States has been successful in settling wars, adding, “that was going very badly. We did that through trade. I said, we are not going to talk to you about trade unless you get this thing settled. And they did.”

He stated that the US also intervened in the war between Rwanda and the Congo, which was going on for 30 years.

In the past, Trump has made similar claims of easing tensions between India and Pakistan which escalated after the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed at least 26 civilians. He was also the first to announce a ceasefire between the two countries.

India maintains that the ceasefire was reached after Pakistan’s DGMO contacted the Indian counterpart and requested to stop all military actions.

During the meeting, Trump also spoke about the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, saying that he was unhappy with the former. He threatened Russia with 'severe' tariffs and announced a rejuvenated pipeline for American weapons to reach Ukraine weeks after he promised to resolve the war started by Russian President Vladimir Putin, when he invaded Ukraine three years ago.

Trump has often criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for allowing the war to happen but more recently has expressed growing frustration toward Putin.

Recently, there were doubts about Trump’s support for sending weapons to Ukraine after the Pentagon temporarily stopped shipments, worried that US supplies were running low, but he now assured that “billions and billions” of dollars of US military equipment to be transferred to Ukraine.

“It just keeps going on and on and on,” he said, “Every night, people are dying.”
