In a significant development from the International Cricket Council (ICC) Board meeting held on Saturday in Singapore, embattled USA Cricket (USAC) has been granted a three-month reprieve to address its persistent governance issues.
USAC had been on notice by the ICC since July 2024 to rectify its internal affairs. However, a Normalisation Committee that recently visited the United States reportedly found insufficient progress. Despite this, the ICC opted against immediate suspension, largely due to the unique circumstance of the United States hosting the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, where cricket will feature for the first time in over a century. The Jay Shah-led ICC Board acknowledged the sensitive nature of the situation, providing USAC a crucial window to get its house in order.
However, a significant paradox looms: while the US men's and women's teams are expected to receive automatic qualification as hosts for the LA28 Olympics, the very entity tasked with selecting these teams – USAC – is battling serious governance questions. The coming three months will determine if USAC can meet the USOPC's requirements to be entrusted with this vital responsibility.
Adding clarity to the road to LA28, the ICC has decided to implement a hybrid qualification model for the Olympic cricket tournament. This means some teams will secure their spots based on their ICC T20 rankings, while others will have to battle it out in a dedicated qualifier event. India, currently the top-ranked T20 team, is strongly positioned for automatic qualification regardless of the final ranking cut-off date.
Further demonstrating its forward-looking approach, the ICC Board also announced the constitution of a working group. This group is tasked with making recommendations on the future structure of all three formats of the game, with further details anticipated to be released on Sunday, the concluding day of the annual conference in Singapore.
The decisions made at this conference underscore the ICC's commitment to both stabilising its member boards and shaping the future of cricket, especially with its grand return to the Olympic stage.
