Here are the highlights of the fifth and final day of the India vs 1st Test going on at Headingley, Leeds. England pulled off a stunning five-wicket win over India at Headingley, chasing down 371 on the final day to take a 1-0 lead in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. It was their second-highest successful chase in Test history and the second-most ever against India. The partnership between Ben Duckett (149) and Zak Crawley (65), which yielded 188 for the first wicket, set the tone, while Joe Root (53*) and debutant Jamie Smith (44*) closed out the match with an unbroken 71-run stand. Earlier, India had dominated with the bat, scoring 471 in the first innings courtesy of centuries from Gill, Pant, and Jaiswal, but collapsed late, losing 7 for 41. England responded with 465, recovering from 276/5 as India let the game slip again. KL Rahul (137) and Pant (118) added 195 in the second innings, but another collapse saw India bowled out for 364, leaving England 371 to chase. The win made Headingley the only ground to witness three 350+ successful chases and this was just the third Test in history where all four innings exceeded 350.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: Pitch Report!

Pitch Report By Sunil Gavaskar For Sony Sports Network: "Extremely overcast conditions here at Headingley. The fast bowlers will love it, but there isn’t much help for them on this surface because the grass has been shaved off, and it looks like a dry, almost Indian pitch. The footmarks created by the pacers will aid the spinners. The pacers will be looking to bowl from Kirkstall Lane end. There are plenty of cracks a bit outside the off stump from that end.

A moment of silence was observed at Headingley as players and match officials from both teams lined up wearing black armbands in memory of legendary Indian left-arm spinner Dilip Joshi, whose passing has cast a shadow over the day’s play. As a mark of respect, the teams stood together in solemn tribute, honoring a cricketer whose contributions to Indian cricket left an indelible mark.

The players and umpires are walking out, with KL Rahul rallying his teammates in the Indian huddle, firing them up for the final push. Let the final chapter of this classic Test begin!

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 27/0 (8.0)

The final day at Headingley is underway with Jasprit Bumrah starting around the wicket to Ben Duckett, who cautiously negotiates the opening deliveries, pushing the first into the off-side before defending a sharp second ball that kicks up off a length. Duckett momentarily shifts the momentum by driving a crisp boundary through the covers off the third ball. Bumrah finishes the over with a peach — a delivery that angles in and then seams away past Duckett’s edge like an off-break, drawing gasps.

Mohammed Siraj follows up from the other end, with Zak Crawley inside-edging the first ball for a single. Duckett then absorbs pressure through a series of dot balls before pinching a single off the last to retain strike, as the early exchanges hint at the tension and quality that lie ahead.

No breakthrough yet for India, but the pressure is steadily mounting on the English openers as Bumrah and Siraj probe relentlessly. Bumrah offers Ben Duckett a couple of tempting short and wide deliveries outside off, but the left-hander wisely resists the urge on the first and only half-commits to the second, which dies just short of the slip cordon.

The real action, however, comes from the other end where Siraj produces a peach — a sharp nip-backer that slices through Zak Crawley’s attempted drive and nearly shaves the off stump. He follows it up with another vicious in-ducker that thuds into the pads, prompting an optimistic lbw appeal, though replays suggest it was bouncing over. A superb over from Siraj — full of menace, movement, and growing signs that a wicket may not be far off.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 48/0 (16)

India opted for a review against Zak Crawley for a potential lbw off Mohammed Siraj, as the England opener, batting well outside his crease, attempted a flick to the leg side and was struck on the pad. However, the decision quickly went against the visitors upon review — with ball-tracking confirming what was evident to the naked eye: Crawley was far down the pitch and the ball was comfortably missing leg stump. A hopeful referral that came to nothing for India, who continue their search for an early breakthrough.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 63/0 (18)

It’s drinks on the final morning at Headingley, and England’s openers have done a commendable job weathering the early pressure in testing conditions under lights. Ben Duckett (34*) and Zak Crawley (23*) have added 63 unbeaten runs, showing solid temperament against India’s new-ball attack.

Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj asked plenty of questions, but without reward, while Shardul Thakur struggled for consistency, conceding runs at a costly rate. India also burned a review on an optimistic lbw appeal against Crawley, with replays confirming the ball was comfortably missing leg stump. With 308 runs still needed for victory, England have made a steady start to what promises to be a gripping final day.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 87/0 (22)

A huge roar erupts from the Headingley crowd as Ben Duckett brings up his second fifty of the match and the 15th of his Test career, nudging Shardul Thakur behind square on the leg side for a single. Reaching the milestone off just 66 balls, Duckett’s knock has once again epitomised control and intent — key hallmarks of his resurgence since being reintroduced to the England side in late 2022 after a six-year absence.

In the Bazball era, Duckett has become a vital cog at the top, combining fearless strokeplay with smart game awareness, and his calm presence this morning has laid a solid platform for England in their daunting chase of 371.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 106/0 (25)

A commanding statement from England’s openers as Zak Crawley drives a crisp boundary through cover point to bring up a 100-run partnership with Ben Duckett, setting the tone in their pursuit of 371. The shot — a textbook punch off a good length delivery outside off — raced past a deep backward point and into the fence, underlining the authority with which the pair have batted.

It’s been a dominant opening stand, marked by balance, positive intent, and sharp shot selection, as Crawley and Duckett continue to frustrate India in what is shaping up to be a gripping final day at Headingley.

Finally, India had a small win as the ball was changed after failing the ring test, much to Jadeja’s delight, who playfully celebrated in front of umpire Gaffaney, drawing a smile as the match continued to bubble with intensity. A chaotic and eventful passage of play unfolded at Headingley as India continued to search desperately for a breakthrough. Ravindra Jadeja bowled a tight maiden, nearly creating a chance when Crawley top-edged a paddle sweep onto his chest, but the ball landed safely.

At the other end, Bumrah struck Duckett on the pad, prompting a half-hearted appeal, though it was sliding down leg and Shubman Gill wisely opted against the review, with replays later showing umpire’s call. Duckett responded with a crisp drive off a full toss for three, before the over turned dramatic — Bumrah dropped a sharp return catch off Crawley, the ball flying low to his weaker left hand. To add to the drama, a wild delivery down leg resulted in four byes.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 117/0 (30) Lunch

England head to lunch on Day 5 with all ten wickets intact, thanks to a resolute and confident opening stand between Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, who have taken their team to 117 without loss in pursuit of 371. With just a minute left on the clock before the break, Crawley cleverly ensured that Jasprit Bumrah wouldn't bowl another over, preserving England’s momentum as they walked off unscathed.

The Indian bowlers, especially Bumrah and Siraj, found movement under overcast skies — ideal bowling conditions — but couldn’t capitalise, with chances going down and luck eluding them.

England have now added 96 runs in the first session to their overnight score of 21, reducing the target to 254 from 66 overs, and placing themselves firmly in the game. Despite a forecast of early rain, the skies stayed dry, and Crawley (on 42*) and Duckett (on 64*) made full use of the conditions. It’s been a near-flawless effort so far from the English openers — cautious when needed, aggressive when possible — as India find themselves needing something special to break through in this gripping final-day battle.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: Shastri's Advice To India

Ravi Shastri speaking for Sky Sports says, "The ball didn't seam as much as India would have hoped for and it didn't swing enough, although the bounce was a little up and down.

"India bowled better than they did yesterday but they have to be patient.

"I would like to see a long spell for Jadeja and the three seamers rotating from the Kirkstall Lane End.

"Gill followed the ball at times with his fields when you have to be clear-cut in your mindset and show you want to win, have catching fielders.

"Once you get a couple of wickets, the game can turn on its head. Then the pressure goes on the opposition."

A brief spell of drizzle during the lunch interval brought the main covers on at Headingley, with a few umbrellas popping up in the Western Terrace. However, the rain was light enough for Akash Deep to continue bowling on a practice pitch, and just minutes later, the covers were rolled off again.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 129/0 (34)

Despite the drizzle picking up slightly and umbrellas popping up around Headingley, England's openers remained unfazed, continuing their steady march in the chase. Ben Duckett neatly tucked Bumrah off his pads for a couple before driving confidently through midwicket for two more, as six runs came from the over.

Siraj, meanwhile, leaked singles with inconsistent lines, including a leg bye, and even struck Rishabh Pant painfully on the knee with a wayward delivery, causing a brief moment of discomfort for the Indian keeper. Siraj, however, ended the over with a beauty that beat Crawley’s outside edge, offering a glimmer of hope in an otherwise frustrating phase for India.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 177/0 (40)

Ben Duckett brought up a magnificent century with a stunning reverse sweep through cover point, sending the crowd at Headingley into raptures. It was a shot that epitomized his fearless style, as he reached his 6th Test ton in just 34 matches—and his second against India. The milestone came in the fourth innings of a tense chase, underlining Duckett's temperament and value to England's red-ball setup. His knock has been a masterclass in control, aggression, and calculated risk, keeping England firmly on course in their pursuit of 371, as he continues to frustrate the Indian bowlers with every stroke.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 181/0 (40.5)

Rain has returned to Headingley, forcing an abrupt halt to play just as England’s openers continued their dominance. Umpire Paul Reiffel signaled for the covers as the drizzle intensified, prompting Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley to dash off the field, shielding their bats from the rain, while the Indian players trudged off more slowly—perhaps using the pause to reset and regroup.

The hover cover was swiftly deployed as umbrellas popped up around the ground. Though the skies remain overcast, conditions don’t appear too threatening, raising hopes that this is only a brief interruption. Play will only resume once the rain fully subsides and the ground is deemed fit by the officials.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 181/0 (41)

The players and umpires are back out in the middle at Headingley as play resumes after the rain break. The brief drizzle has disappeared, the covers have been removed, and the stumps are firmly back in place. Mohammed Siraj has just one delivery left to complete his 13th over, with Ben Duckett on strike and Zak Crawley standing tall at the non-striker’s end.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 192/1 (43)

England are halfway to their target, but India have finally broken through! Zak Crawley, who looked in supreme control throughout his knock, brought up England’s 186th run with a commanding pull shot off Prasidh Krishna’s first delivery of the spell. However, Prasidh struck back immediately with a delivery that shaped away just enough to catch Crawley’s outside edge.

KL Rahul, ever reliable in the slips, pouched the chance cleanly to give India their much-needed first wicket. Crawley departs for a well-made 65, and Ollie Pope — the centurion from the first innings — strides out to join Ben Duckett with England still requiring 185 runs for victory.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 211/2 (45)

Prasidh Krishna strikes again, and India are right back in it! Just eight balls after removing Zak Crawley, he now sends Ollie Pope packing for a duck. It’s a perfect delivery — good length, nipping back in off the seam — and Pope, looking to defend, gets an inside edge onto his back thigh before the ball ricochets onto the leg stump. Pope’s fourth-innings woes continue, and Prasidh, despite being expensive earlier, has delivered two crucial blows in quick succession. England suddenly find themselves at 186/2, with the momentum shifting towards India.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 238/2 (51)

Ben Duckett continues to showcase his class in this masterful fourth-innings knock, mixing elegance with opportunism. After a defensive cue-end to mid-off, he followed up by creaming Prasidh Krishna through the covers for four — a shot that underlined his command.

Moments later, a top-edged pull off a sharp Krishna bouncer flew down to deep fine leg for another boundary, less regal but just as telling. Duckett remains unfazed, and with England needing just 133 more runs in 45 overs, his presence at the crease is increasingly becoming India’s biggest headache.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 246/2 (52)

The ball has gone out of shape — perhaps unsurprisingly, given the pounding it has taken from Ben Duckett — prompting both umpires to inspect and ultimately call for a replacement. As the new ball is selected, the players pause for a scheduled drinks break. England, firmly in control at 246/2, now require just 125 more runs to complete a record chase, with a minimum of 44 overs remaining in the day. The change in ball might offer India a glimmer of hope, but time and momentum are very much in England’s favour.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 269/4 (58.3) Tea Break

At Tea on Day 5 of the first Test, the match remains delicately poised as a sudden drizzle forced players off the field. The session had begun with Prasidh Krishna removing Zak Crawley early, breaking a commanding 188-run opening stand. A brief 22-minute rain delay followed, prompting a shift in the Tea break. England continued to dominate with Ben Duckett in sublime touch, but Shardul Thakur turned the tide late in the session with a double strike — removing Duckett for a brilliant 149 and dismissing Harry Brook the very next ball.

Ravindra Jadeja also found some bite off the surface, troubling batters with turn and bounce. While England still need 102 runs with six wickets in hand, the pitch's unpredictability and India's late surge have left the game tantalisingly open.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 283/4 (62)

A dramatic passage of play unfolded as India burned their final review on a marginal LBW call against Joe Root. Chris Gaffaney was unmoved, but Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant managed to convince captain Shubman Gill to take the chance. The delivery was a quicker arm ball that skidded through from middle, beating Root’s inside edge and thudding into the pad.

Replays confirmed there was no bat, but the ball was angling down and missing leg stump by a fair margin. Moments later, Jadeja produced a beauty—full on middle, turning just enough to kiss the outside edge—but Pant, diving to his left, grassed a tough chance. To make matters worse, sloppy fielding from Shardul Thakur allowed the batters to steal three runs as he slipped, failed to recover, and simply lay on the turf in frustration. Jadeja’s fury was visible. In a game hanging in the balance, India’s discipline in both decision-making and fielding deserted them.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: 0 Successfull Review For Skipper Gill

Shubman Gill has had a rough start with the DRS on his captaincy debut — out of six reviews taken, five have been unsuccessful, and the only one that went in his favor was upheld merely on umpire's call.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 302/5 (68)

It had been brewing for a while. Ben Stokes’ persistent attempts at the reverse sweep against Ravindra Jadeja never looked convincing, and it finally cost him—he top-edged one straight to Shubman Gill stationed in the gully. That wicket marked the seventh time Jadeja has dismissed Stokes in Tests, with the England captain averaging just 20.28 against the left-arm spinner.

In walked Jamie Smith, facing not just a challenging match situation but also the pressure to showcase his temperament after a soft dismissal in the first innings.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 328/5 (75)

Jamie Smith ended the over in style, caressing a lovely cover drive off Jadeja for four, keeping England’s hopes alive as the target came down to just 43. With six overs remaining before the new ball becomes available, England will back themselves to get there—especially with India’s bowling looking ragged at times.

Prasidh Krishna, in particular, has struggled to contain the runs, conceding at an economy rate of 6.28 — the most expensive by any Indian bowler in Test history who has bowled a minimum of 20 overs. His erratic spell has only added to the pressure as India search desperately for a breakthrough.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 355/5 (81)

With just 22 runs needed and 16 overs remaining, India turned to their final hope—Mohammed Siraj armed with the new ball. But the pressure didn’t faze Joe Root. The Headingley crowd erupted as their hometown hero reached his 66th Test fifty, fittingly matching the number on the back of his shirt.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: ENG 465 & 373/5 Beat India 471 & 364 By Five Wickets

England pulled off a stunning heist at Headingley, chasing down 371 to register their second-highest successful chase in Test history and the second-most ever against India. It was also the third 350-plus chase at this venue—making Headingley the only ground to witness such feats three times.

The five-wicket win gave England a 1-0 lead in the five-match series and marked one of the finest victories under the Stokes-McCullum regime. Despite being under pressure for much of the match, England stayed in the hunt and capitalised on every opportunity India offered.

India had multiple chances to shut the door but repeatedly let England back in. After posting 471 in the first innings, thanks to hundreds from Jaiswal, Rahul, and Gill, they collapsed from 430/3 to 471 all out—losing seven wickets for just 41 runs. England responded with 465, aided by Duckett's 62, Pope’s century, and Brook’s 99.

India had them at 276/5 but allowed the last five wickets to add 189 crucial runs. With a slender lead of just six, the match turned into a one-innings shootout. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant struck contrasting centuries to push India to 364 in the second dig, but again, a familiar collapse followed—they slid from 333/4 to 364 all out, losing six wickets for 31 runs with the second new ball. England's chase was led by a masterful 149 from Duckett and a composed unbeaten fifty from Root, sealing a record win on a ground that continues to produce historic finishes.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: Player of The Match (Ben Duckett)

Ben Duckett (POTM): "Not sure, to be honest. Just incredible Test match to be part of. India were superb. To go into the last day and finish like we did was incredible. Wanted to get through last evening without losing wickets. We wanted to get through that period.

It was clear this morning that if we batted through, we would get home and didn’t overthink it. Just saw out Jasprit’s first spell and then played our natural game.

2022 Edgbaston was mentioned, but I wasn't there in that Test. Guys in the dressing room believed. We’ve said it a number of times, everyone was incredible. At times, we were completely behind. India played really well on Day 1. We have shown maturity throughout the day and shown how much it means to win. At times, we were behind in this game, but massive credit to our bowlers who got the tail out cheaply. Else, you would add 50-60 runs to the target, which would be a different ball game.

We saw how Zak Crawley did well in the last game against Zimbabwe. He played well and was calm. Respect good balls and put the bad ones away was the way to go. Jasprit Bumrah was superb in the first innings. To limit his impact was massive for us. We played him very well today. He is a world-class bowler.

Tough to play Jadeja with a straight bat, especially with him bowling on the roughs outside off, it's (reverse sweep) a shot I go to a lot. Sometimes, I use it to get to the other end, later in the innings, for boundaries.

At the start of the partnership between Root and Smith, it would have been a different game had they gotten a wicket, but Root, there being calm, kept us calm in the dressing room. Jamie Smith taking us home at the end was amazing."

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: Shubman Gill Quotes

Shubman Gill (India Captain): "A brilliant Test match. We had chances in the match, a few dropped catches and the lower order didn't contribute as it would have been.

Yesterday we were thinking to give them around 400-430 to chase and declare but our lower order added around 20-25 runs which is never a good sign but even today I thought after their brilliant opening partnership we did have our chances but just didn't go our way.

[On dropped catches] Chances don't come easy on wickets like these and we dropped quite a few catches but we have got a young team which is still learning. Hopefully in the next matches we'd be able to improve on those aspects.

[What could be done different as a captain] The first session we bowled, we were quite spot on but it's quite hard to stop the runs once the ball gets old and you have to keep picking wickets to stay in the game. Unfortunately some catches didn't find the fielders, didn't go our way but I think they batted really well. After the ball got old they took their chances and their opening partnership took the game away from us.

[On Jadeja on day 5] He bowled brilliantly. He created some chances for us, few pop ups but that happens in a game of cricket. You kind of expect some chances to go your way.

[On Bumrah] It's definitely more game by game. There's a good break after this Test match so once we are close to the match, we'll see."

IND vs ENG Live Score, 1st Test Day 5: Ben Stokes Quotes

Ben Stokes (England Captain): "We have got some good memories here at Headingley. So, one more to add to it. It was an awesome Test to be part of. Chasing a big total on the final hour of the last day was amazing.

You don't know what'll happen before a ball is bowled. You take the choice that you think is best, depending on the delivery.

We considered what would give us the best chance to win when deciding to bowl. We saw a bit of grass and moisture on the pitch, and we thought it would do a bit for us. The opposition is allowed to play well; we bowled well in the first session. India also played incredibly on day one. I didn't think I should have made a different call at any time.

Duckett was unbelievable. Opening the batting in the fourth innings and chasing is tough, especially here in England. His partnership with Crawley was crucial. They understand each other well. They complement each other well. Getting that good start set us up brilliantly. The way Crawley was able to stay composed and get those 60 was important as well.

Chasing down totals gives you confidence, but it's not a dead set; that's how it goes. It's been a great start to the series. A long summer is coming up. There have been many skills contributing to the win. We have been on the field for long periods, but we turned up each session with an attitude that we'll blow the game open. Tongue's spells in each innings were game-changing for us."
