Rishabh Pant's unfortunate toe injury on Day 1 of the fourth India vs England Test has reportedly turned out to be a fracture, making his further participation in the match unlikely. Pant had gone for scans in Manchester on Wednesday (July 23, 2025) and is said to have been advised six weeks rest, which imperils India in this crucial encounter of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series.

“The scan report showed a fracture and he is ruled out for six weeks. The medical team is trying to see if he can come out to bat again by taking a pain killer. He still needs support to walk though and chances of his batting look very bleak,” a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source was quoted as saying in an Indian Express report.
The report adds that attacking southpaw Ishan Kishan will be added to the Indian squad by the selection committee ahead of the fifth Test at The Oval, as cover for Pant. Dhruv Jurel had kept wickets at Lord's following Pant's finger injury and is the front-runner to replace the Indian vice-captain as the preferred keeper-batter.
Pant's injury was a result of an attempted reverse sweep against Chris Woakes in the 68th over of the innings. The left-hander ended up bottom-edging it on to his right foot and was in evidently severe pain immediately, with the affected spot swelling up. Pant was forced to retire hurt at 37 and had to leave the ground on a golf buggy.
His departure also ended a promising 72-run stand with Sai Sudharsan, who had steadied the Indian innings alongside him.
