A Russian strike in the Dnipropetrovsk region in southeast Ukraine killed at least nine and wounded dozens of passengers, reported Reuters. According to governor Serhiy Lysak, the two-wave strike killed seven in the regional capital of Dnipro, damaged civilian infrastructure and destroyed a train carriage.
The blast shattered the train carriage injuring nearly 70 people including 10 children, said Lysak. Two people were also killed in the town of Samar, which is located 10 kilometers away from Dnipro, as per state emergency services.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha sought support from Ukraine’s western partners who are expected to meet at the NATO summit in The Hague. "It is a matter of credibility for allies to step up pressure on Moscow," Sybiha wrote on X. He also stated that the attack damaged schools, kindergartens and a hospital in Dnipro.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zeelenskyy is expecting to garner more military support for his nation at the NATO summit. Zelenskyy and the United States President Donald Trump are planning to meet on Wednesday on the sidelines of the summit, a senior source in the Ukrainian presidency told AFP.
According to sources, both leaders will discuss Ukraine’s “purchase of a defence package, a large part of which consists of air defence systems”. More sanctions against Russia and an oil cap will also be on the agenda, the source told AFP.
Russia has recently increased the intensity of its attacks on Ukraine. Russia launched its deadliest attack yet on Kyiv last week that killed 28 people and injured more than 150, reported Reuters. At least seven people were killed in Kyiv and several others were wounded in an overnight Russian attack, Ukrainian officials said on Monday.
