Four members of a family, including two teenagers and a 70-year-old woman, died after allegedly consuming Sulphas tablets in Tehar village, about 12 kilometres from the Sagar district headquarters, police said on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Manohar Lodhi (45), his daughter Shivani (18), son Ankit (16), and his mother Phulrani Lodhi (70), according to Khurai Urban police station in-charge Yogendra Singh Dangi.

The incident came to light in the early hours of Saturday when Nandram Singh Lodhi, Manohar’s brother, heard him vomiting around 3 am. He alerted a neighbour and called for an ambulance. By the time help arrived, Phulrani and Ankit had died on the spot.

Shivani and Manohar were taken to Khurai Civil Hospital, where doctors found them in critical condition. “They had all consumed Sulphas tablets,” said Dr Varsha Kesharwani, who was on duty. “Two were brought dead. The girl died before she could be shifted further, while her father passed away on the way to the district hospital.”

Police said Manohar’s wife had gone to her maternal home a few days earlier. The reason behind the suspected suicide is not yet known, and further investigation is underway.

Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of a suicide pact but say they are awaiting more details to establish the sequence of events.
