Two bogies of a goods train travelling from Jammu to Punjab derailed on Thursday morning around 7 AM, due to flooding on the railway track in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district.
The incident disrupted train traffic on the Jammu-Pathankot route and efforts are on to restore the movement of trains, officials said, reported PTI. No loss of life was reported in the incident.
The incident took place in Lakhanpur area of the district, when the train was on its way to Punjab from Jammu.
“Rain triggered the mudslide, causing the derailment of the engine near Lakhanpur around 7 AM, soon after the incident, railway officials reached the spot along with equipment and put rail services back on track” a railway official said, adding the track had been inundated, blocking traffic for more than two hours, reported HT.
"Due to the rain, a landslide all the debris came onto the track. As a result the train got derailed," said Ram Bahadur, a railway trackman, reported ANI.
Five passenger trains to Jammu were delayed by over two hours as they had to be stopped at Pathankot and Sujanpur stations till the track was cleared. Traffic on the route resumed at 9:30 AM.
Kathua has received 174.8mm of rainfall, while Samba has got 96mm and Jammu 37.7mm since Wednesday afternoon.
