What a start for the home side! In a must-win game, Newcastle shown exceptional determination, and the move starts from Anthony Gordon, but the midfielder goes down looking for a penalty. The Magpies disposses Moises Caicedo and play it to Jacob Murphy, who plays a ball across the face of goal. It misses everyone but the onrushing Sandro Tonali, and his shot is messy, but it bounces over Robert Sanchez to give Newcastle a very early lead.

Newcastle have more than 60% of ball possession in the opening 10 minutes, and all of the attacking moves have from their end. Murphy has been lively down the right flank, but his crosses have been sort of dealt with by the centre backs.

The visitors, meanwhile, are growning increasing physical, with a number of fouls on Gordon and Isak.

For a man of Isak's quality, that's a decent chance! A fantastic ball into the box from a free-kick 40 yars away is met by Botman on the left edge of the box, and the defender knocks it back towards the right side where a completley unmarked Isak takes a first time shot. However, his shot is on the ground and bounces up and into Sanchez's gloves.

Meanwhile, Chelsea go up, and after the Magpies fail to clear the ball, Palmer takes a shot which misses the goal, but not by much.

Almost all of Newcastle's attacks are coming down the right side through Murphy, and he feeds Schar, who makes a darting run forward in the box. He is closed down, but the clearance falls to Murphy, who takes on the defenders and passes it to Barnes, and he gets a touch of luck to retain posession and attempts to shoot, but the effort is weak and straight at Sanchez.

Massive call from VAR!! Jackson came running in at Botman, both challenging for the ball, but the Senegalese caught the defender with an elbow to the face. The referee shows a yellow card, but VAR asks him to take another look. Replays show Jackson looking at Botman before hitting him with the elbow, and the ref changes his mind to send him off for serious foul play! Chelsea are down to 10 men!

Despite going down to 10 men, Chelsea are actually enjoying marginally more of the ball at the moment. Madueke and Neto, who are leading the line for the Blues, combined well, but the latter just about missed out on poking the cross home.

However, in a lightning-quick move, Barnes was almost through on goal, but a sliding challenge from Chalobah threw him off, and his shot was wide. Newcastle come forward again and put the ball in the box, but Burns’ header is straight at Sanchez.

Meanwhile, the fourth official’s board goes up – a minimum of six minutes to be added on after the 45 minutes.

The referee blows his whistle, much to Chelsea’s respite, and it’s half-time at St James’ Park. Newcastle lead courtesy of Tonali’s early goal, but the home side will look to take the game to their 10-man opponent in the second half. For Chelsea, Jackson has been sent off, while Enzo Fernandez and Enzo Maresca are booked – both for dissent.

The left-back finds himself on the edge of the box, completely unmarked, and takes a shot with his left foot towards the far corner. Nick Pope, untested throughout the game, shows quick reflex to go down and keep it out with a strong left hand.

With Chelsea dominating ball posession, the game has turned a bit scrappy, with neither side being able to craft clear cut chances, instead trying to go route on towards the opponent's final third.

Bruno Guimaraes had a decent chance after another good ball from Murphy, who has been the home side's best player, but the Brazilian's shot is just wide.

Another good save from Nick Pope, who gets his fingertips from a shot from Fernande, which was assisted by a deflection. It was creeping in, but hte Newcastle goalie did very well to tip it over.

Oh, what a chance for the Blues! Malo Gusto floated in a brilliant ball in the box, and Reece James is there to meet him. The English defender, under very little pressure, tries to head it goalwards, but gets underneath the ball and it lobs over the top bar.

A stunning, stunning goal from Bruno Guimaraes, and it's pure relief for the St James' Park crowd. A well-worked free kick from Tonali finds Dan Burn on the left edge of the box, and the centre-back plays it to Guimaraes. The Brazilian cuts in and has a crack at goal, and, via a slight deflection, it flies over and nestles in the top corner – nothing Sanchez could have done.

Meanwhile, five minutes added on by the fourth official.
