Friday's second Club World Cup quarter-final in Philadelphia will see a highly anticipated rematch of the 2022 final, as Chelsea once again face Brazilian giants Palmeiras. Three years ago, Chelsea lifted their first Club World Cup trophy after an extra-time victory over the same opponents.
Much has changed for both clubs since that memorable encounter. Chelsea, now under the guidance of Enzo Maresca, features an almost entirely new squad, with none of the players who started the 2022 final still at the club.
Despite the significant turnover, the Blues remain strong contenders in the tournament. They navigated a challenging last-16 tie against Benfica, overcoming a lengthy weather delay and a late penalty to secure a 4-1 extra-time win, with Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall all finding the net.
Fresh off winning the Conference League, Maresca's side will be aiming for a cup double. Their path to the semi-finals appears more favourable after the surprising exits of Manchester City and Inter Milan, potentially setting up a clash with either Fluminense or Al-Hilal.
Key to Chelsea's attack will be Pedro Neto, who has been in scintillating form, scoring in all three of their appearances at the finals. However, they will be without Nicolas Jackson due to suspension and Wesley Fofana through injury, though new signing Joao Pedro has linked up with the squad.
Palmeiras, led by the same manager, Abel Ferreira, who oversaw their 2022 final defeat, will be eager for revenge. They arrive in Philadelphia unbeaten in this Club World Cup campaign, having dispatched Copa Libertadores and Brazilian champions Botafogo in the last 16. Their only prior European opposition in the tournament was a draw against Porto.
The Brazilian side boasts the highly-rated wonderkid Estevao Willian, who is set to join Chelsea after the competition and could get his first taste of facing his future club. While many faces have changed for Palmeiras since 2022, goalkeeper Weverton is expected to be the sole surviving starter from that final. They will, however, be missing Gustavo Gomez and Joaquin Piquerez due to suspension.
