Actress Kajol returned to the big screen, with Maa, after a gap of three years. Her last theatrical release was 2022 film, Salaam Venky. Directed by Chhorii fame, Vishal Furia, Maa is a mythological horror thriller. The film received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike. Though many called it familiar 'myth-meets-fantasy' horror flick, Kajol has been receiving overwhelming response for her stellar act. Maa had a slow start on Day 1, and is trailing behind Vishnu Manchu's Kannappa and Brad Pitt's F1.

Kajol-starrer earned Rs 4.65 crore, as per a report in Sacnilk. It had an overall 20.52% Hindi occupancy on Friday. Night shows witnessed highest occupancy of 32.61%, while morning shows recorded lowest occupancy of just 8.23%. Afternoon and evening shows had 20.08% and 21.16% footfall, respectively.

It is facing a tough competition from F1 and Kannappa, at the box office. Pitt starrer sports drama reportedly earned an estimated Rs 5 crore nett, while Manchu's mythological epic film collected Rs 8.5 crore nett, on Day 1.

Maa plot

Kajol plays Ambika, a fearless mother who can go to any length to protect her daughter from supernatural forces. The film, which is a blend of myth and horror, marks Kajol first project into the horror genre.

Apart from Kajol, Maa also stars Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, Jitin Gulati, and Kherin Sharma. It is backed by Ajay Devgn and Jyoti Subbarayan.

Maa has received a UA 16+ certificate, and a runtime of 2 hours and 15 minutes.
