Trump Says Gaza Ceasefire Possible ‘Within Next Week’

United States President Donald Trump on Friday said that a possible ceasefire in Gaza, involving Israel and Hamas could be reached within a week, reported Reuters. “We think within the next week, we’re going to get a ceasefire, and we’re supplying, as you know, a lot of money and a lot of food to that area,” Trump said. 

Speaking to reporters at the White House celebrating a Congo-Rwanda accord, he said that he believes that the ceasefire is close. “I just spoke with some of the people involved. It’s a terrible situation,” the US president said. 

Trump did not reveal any more details about the talks but asserted that he was in near-daily contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the Israel-Iran conflict. 

Netanyahu had earlier claimed that the outcome of Israel's war with Iran presented opportunities for peace that his country must not waste. "This victory presents an opportunity for a dramatic widening of peace agreements. We are working on this with enthusiasm," Netanyahu said in a statement.

The US had brokered a ceasefire in the conflict in January 2025 which was violated by Israel in March after they launched massive airstrikes on Gaza. Israel had also administered an aid-blockade triggering a humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The United Nations had urged for the blockade to be lifted stating that the Palestinian population is on the brink of a famine. 

Israel eventually allowed some aid into the territory which the UN termed as “a drop in the ocean.” The aid was allowed through the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which involves U.S. security contractors with Israeli troops at the periphery. Under this aid system, several reports of people being killed by the Israeli military and airstrikes have surfaced. 

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, the conflict has killed nearly 56,000 Palestinians since it began on October 7, 2023.
