India Vs England 4th Test: Gill Says Washington And Jadeja Deserved Their Centuries

India's Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar

Shubman Gill hailed Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja after their stubborn centuries sealed a draw against England.

India appeared set for defeat after England had posted 669 runs, their fifth-highest total in Test history, before the tourists saw Yashasvi and Sai Sudharsan dismissed early in their second innings.

But Gill's century set the tone for India, with their lower order then taking charge as Washington and Jadeja posted scores of 101 and 107, respectively.

Indeed, Washington's ton was the 11th by India in this series, which is the most by any visiting side in England.

Ben Stokes did, however, offer to end play earlier with India 75 in front at 386-4, but Washington and Jadeja chose to bat on as they approached their centuries, with play then called when the tourists were 114 ahead.

"It was up to the boys. I thought they batted brilliantly, both of them were in the 90s, and both deserved their centuries," Gill said.

"I am extremely pleased with our batting effort over the past couple of days.

"I think we were put under a lot of pressure, but the way we responded, especially after losing two wickets, was a very brave effort. It's all taking the pitch out of the equation.

"A day five wicket something is happening, every ball is kind of an event. You want to play it ball by ball and take it as deep as possible."

India must now win the fifth and final Test in order to draw the series, with England leading 2-1 heading to The Oval.

Gill was quizzed on Jasprit Bumrah's availability for the match, which starts on Thursday.

Bumrah conceded more than 100 runs in an innings for the first time in his Test career at Old Trafford.

The 31-year-old is India's highest wicket-taker in the series, collecting 14 in total across the three matches he has played in, registering a five-wicket haul along the way.

The ideal situation for India would see Bumrah miss out as India continue to manage his workload, but with the possibility of drawing the series, Gill suggested he could take a risk.

"I haven't really thought about Bumrah playing," Gill added.

"Once we get there, then we will have a look at the wicket, but if he feels fully fit and available for us, then it will be a great deal for us, but if not, we still have a good bowling attack with Akash Deep being available for the last Test match, and we believe we have a bowling attack that could take 20 wickets."
