Indian captain Shubman Gill and KL Rahul have made history on the fourth day of the fourth Test against England on Saturday when the duo became the first batting pair in 55 years to reach 500-plus runs in an away Test series - a milestone that was last achieved by former captain Sunil Gavaskar and Dilip Sardesai in 1970-71.

Their record partnership for the third-wicket came a crucial juncture for the visitors in the fourth Test against England Old Trafford, Manchester. After England amassed 669 in their first innings, led by Ben Stokes' brilliant 141, India were jolted early by the wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal (0) and Sai Sudharsan (0) leaving them 0/2.

However, Gill (78 not out) and Rahul (87 not out) steadied the ship with a block-athon as they took India to 174/2 at stumps on day 4, still trailing by 137 runs and the momentum slightly turning towards the visiting team.

While saving the match for India, Gill and Rahul also broke some records along the way. Gill's tally of runs reached 697 runs for the series whereas KL Rahul amassed 500-plus runs - become the second Indian opener since Gavaskar and Sardesai to do so.

This is only the second instance in Indian cricket history where two batters have crossed 500-run mark in a single away Test series. The previous record was achieved in 1970-71 when Gavaskar (774) and Sardesai (642) took down the West Indies attack.

Multiple IND Batters With 500-plus Runs In Same Away Test Series

  • Sunil Gavaskar (774) & Dilip Sardesai (642) vs West Indies, 1970-71

  • Shubman Gill (697) & KL Rahul (508) vs England, 2025

Rahul also became the second visiting Asian opener to score 500-plus in a Test series against England after Gavaskar, who scored 542 runs in 1979, and the first visiting opener since South Africa's Graeme Smith (714) to register the feat in the 21st century.

India will hope that the rain gods intervene on the final day and take the game result to a draw, setting up a fascinating final Test match of the series up at The Oval.
