The FIDE Women’s Chess World Cup 2025 final just concluded that witnessed an-Indian affair between Divya Deshmukh and Koneru Humpy in Batumi, Georgia.

In the end, the 19-year-old Divya emerge victorious against her own countrywoman and win the final in the rapid tiebreaks after two classical draws.

The result also saw Divya become the first Indian to win the Women's World Cup trophy and earn plaudits from all corners of the country. Her performance throughout the event was that of calm and composed. Despite immense pressure, the 19-year-old did not portray any signs of nervousness as she battled hard in the final stages.

Back home in India, PM Narendra Modi congratulated the 19-year-old Grandmaster, calling it a 'remarkable feet'.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated her via social media. He took to X and wrote, “A historic final featuring two outstanding Indian chess players! Proud of the young Divya Deshmukh on becoming FIDE Women's World Chess Champion 2025. Congratulations to her for this remarkable feat, which will inspire several youngsters. Koneru Humpy has also displayed immense prowess throughout the championship. Best wishes to both players for their future endeavours.”

How Much Did Divya Deshmukh Earn In Prize Money?

The 2025 FIDE Women's World Cup featured a total prize money of US $691,250, which was distributed to players across various rounds.

As per the tournament's rules, the top two will earn a grand amount of the prize money. With Divya winning the title, she was awarded $50,000 whereas Koneru Humpy walked away with $35,000.

It Will Take Time To Process Victory, Says Divya Deshmukh

"I need time to process it (victory). It think it was fate me getting the Grandmaster title this way because I didn't even have one norm (coming into the event) and all I was thinking of was 'Oh, when can I get my norm', and now I'm a Grandmaster so...," said Deshmukh, who beat compatriot Koneru Humpy to emerge winner.

"It's hard for me to speak right now. It definitely means a lot, but of course there's a lot more to achieve," said Deshmukh.

"I'm hoping this is just the start." The achievement made Deshmukh only the fourth Indian woman to become a GM after Humpy, Dronavalli Harika and R. Vaishali.
