Amidst the rising tensions, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad issued a security alert, warning Americans in Iraq of a “heightened risk of violence” and urging them to avoid public gatherings and locations frequented by foreigners. The State Department reiterated its Level 4 Travel Advisory for Iraq, strongly discouraging any travel to the country.
Casualties from the conflict are rising. A Washington-based human rights group, Human Rights Activists, reported that Israeli strikes in Iran have killed at least 406 people and injured another 654. The attacks reportedly targeted military leadership, residential areas, and nuclear infrastructure. However, these figures are yet to be officially confirmed by Iranian authorities.
Closer to home, concerns are growing for Indian nationals in the region. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah confirmed he spoke with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar regarding the safety of Kashmiri students studying in Iran. In a post on X, Abdullah said Jaishankar assured him that the Indian government is “in close contact with Iranian authorities and taking all necessary steps to safeguard Indian citizens.”
This came after NC leader Agha Ruhullah claimed that an Israeli airstrike had struck a hostel housing several Kashmiri students. While official verification is awaited, the Indian government has pledged to remain vigilant and proactive in ensuring the safety of its nationals.
