United States President Donald Trump targeted Harvard again in regard to the composition of the international student population and urged that the Ivy-league university disclose the nationalities of these students, calling it a “reasonable request” .
“Why isn’t Harvard saying that almost 31% of their students are from FOREIGN LANDS, and yet those countries, some not at all friendly to the United States, pay NOTHING toward their student’s education, nor do they ever intend to,” the social media post mentioned.
“Nobody told us that! We want to know who those foreign students are, a reasonable request since we give Harvard BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, but Harvard isn’t exactly forthcoming. We want those names and countries,” it added.
The row between Harvard University - country’s oldest and richest university - and the Trump administration is part of the wider crackdown of the government and the Ivy-league universities, demanding it alters its curriculum and change criteria of protests on campus, amongst other demands.
Trump on Friday supported the Department of Homeland Security’s ban on Harvard, informing the university that if within 72 hours the university does not comply with the federal demands, Harvard will lose its privilege of enrolling international students. Harvard University challenged the move, calling it unconstitutional for defying to comply with the political demands of the US government. A federal judge on Friday had blocked the US government from implementing the decision.
Careers of around 6,800 international students, including 800 students from India are now at risk.
