Four men have been arrested for gang-raping a 15-year-old girl in Jajpur district of Odisha on Monday. The men, hockey trainers have allegedly gang-raped the teenager who is also a hockey player and their charge.
The incident allegedly took place on the evening of July 3. The survivor filed an FIR with Jajpur town police on Sunday night and thereafter police made their arrests.
In her complaint, the girl said she had been receiving training at Jajpur hockey stadium in the district headquarters town for the past two years. According to the FIR, on July 3 evening, the teenager had completed her training and was returning home when coaches Sarthak Mohanty, Sandip Swain and Sagar Nayak abducted her. She said they took her to a lodge and took turns to sexually assaulted her. The accused also threatened to kill the girl if she revealed the incident to anyone, stated the complaint.
The girl’s mother has said that one of the coaches had been harassing the survivor both physically and mentally for the last six months. “We had informed the local sports authorities about the matter. The authorities assured us to take it up with the internal complaints committee. However, no action was taken,” she has reportedly claimed.
Jajpur Town IIC Sarat Patra has said that police registered a case under sections 70 (2), 35 (2) and 74 of BNS and section 6 of the POCSO Act. Police detained four hockey trainers and reportedly are now interrogating them. The minor girl was produced in court on Monday so that the magistrate could record her statement.
Jajpur SP Yashpratap Shrimal said four suspects have been detained in connection with the incident. Further action will be taken on basis of the statements of the accused.
