As India look to regroup for the second Test against England in Birmingham, debate is intensifying over who should replace Shardul Thakur, whose position is under scrutiny after a costly outing at Headingley.
While many have called for the inclusion of Kuldeep Yadav, former India pacer Dodda Ganesh believes Washington Sundar would be the smarter choice.
Ganesh, in conversation with PTI, outlined his reasoning, pointing out Washington’s all-round value and his effectiveness against left-handers. “Washington can also take the ball away from left-handers, and of course, he is a much better batsman too and can be slotted in various positions. He has that flexibility,” Ganesh said, backing the off-spinning all-rounder to strengthen both the bowling and batting units.
While Kuldeep offers wrist-spin variety, his limited exposure to red-ball cricket in English conditions — just one first-class match — and his expensive returns in his last Test appearance against New Zealand (economy rates of 5.3 and 8.6) raise concerns.
In contrast, Ravindra Jadeja’s tighter lines against the same opposition (3.6 economy in both innings) serve as a reminder of what control can achieve on blustery surfaces similar to those in England.
With India seeking to sharpen their lengths and regain control in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar’s inclusion could provide the balance they need. The final decision could go a long way in determining whether India can bounce back at a venue where they have never won a Test.
