Jasmine Paolini was on the end of a major upset in the second round of the Canadian Open, as Japan's Aoi Ito saved match point before claiming a 2-6 7-5 7-6 (7-5) victory.
Ito had never previously beaten a top-20 ranked player, and she looked set for an early exit from the Montreal tournament as Paolini went 6-2 4-1 up.
The world number 105 won the next three games to get back on terms, but she then faced match point at 5-4 down.
However, after fending Paolini off to hold, Ito took advantage of errors in the two-time grand slam finalist's game to get an immediate break, allowing her to make it a set apiece.
A topsy-turvy deciding set featured eight breaks of serve – four for each player – before advancing to a tie-break, and Ito held her nerve to claim the biggest win of her career.
Ito will face Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the third round, while Mirra Andreeva's progress was secured by an injury to Bianca Andreescu.
Canadian favourite Andreescu rolled her ankle on match point as she recorded a 6-3 6-4 victory over Barbora Krejcikova in the first round, causing her to withdraw from her scheduled clash with fourth seed Andreeva.
Emma Navarro, meanwhile, needed just 63 minutes to beat another Canadian, Rebecca Marino, 6-1 6-2 in her second-round match.
A third Canadian also exited the draw as Leylah Fernandez failed to build on last week's Washington Open title win, losing 6-4 6-1 to Maya Joint.
Data Debrief: Navarro in good company
Navarro's dominant win over Marino on Tuesday was her 70th at WTA Tour-level in 2025.
She is one of just seven players on the tour to reach that figure this year, alongside Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula and Andreeva.
Joint, meanwhile, has won 19 matches on the tour this year, with Andreeva (36) the only teenager to record more victories than the 19-year-old Australian in 2025.
