At Least Six Dead In Stampede At Haridwar's Mansa Devi Temple

There was a rumour of an electric current ahead of the spot where the steps to the temple begin sent the devotees panicking, leading to a stampede.

At least six people died and multiple were injured after a stampede broke out at Haridwar's Mansa Devi temple on Sunday morning.

Local police and rescue teams are engaged in the relief operations. The stampede occurred as the crowd gathered at the temple on Sunday, ANI reported. 

PM Narendra Modi expressed his condolences. "Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to a stampede on the route to Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar, Uttarakhand. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. The local administration is assisting those affected," he wrote on X.

Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on X, “It is extremely distressing to receive news of a stampede on the route to the Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar.SDRF Uttarakhand Police, local police, and other rescue teams have reached the site and are engaged in relief and rescue operations.” 

He added that he was in constant contact with the local administration regarding this matter, and the situation is being closely monitored. 

The District Magistrate Mayur Dixit said that through photos and videos, it was found that someone spread the rumour of electric wire breaking. “While looking at the injured or the dead, we did not get any such indication... We will investigate who spread the rumour that caused the stampede and a magisterial inquiry will be set up investigating cameras and other means,” ANI reported. 

Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police Pramendra Singh Dobal told PTI Videos that 35 people had been rushed to a hospital, of whom six died.

On the stampede at Haridwar's Mansa Devi Temple, SSP Pramendra Singh Dobhal says, "We have spoken with the temple administration and trust, and we have concluded that implementing a one-way system is absolutely essential. The one-way system will be implemented with immediate effect. To ensure such an incident does not happen again, SP City has been appointed as the nodal officer and given additional authority... During the month of Sawan, there is a continuous crowd, so we are analysing to enhance security arrangements accordingly. Plans will be implemented to prevent such incidents from recurring. A case has been registered regarding today's incident..." he said to ANI.
