Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the brink of breaking Sunil Gavaskar's record which has lasted almost half a century now. Jaiswal could become the fastest Indian to reach 2000 Test runs if he scores 97 runs in the second India vs England Test that takes place at Edgbaston in Birmingham from July 2.
Gavaskar, the first man to reach 10000 Test runs, reached 2000 runs in 23 Tests, the fastest till now for an Indian in terms of matches played. However, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag both amassed 2000 runs in 40 innings, which remains the fastest for an Indian in terms of innings batted.
If the 23-year-old Jaiswal manages to score 97 in his next innings, he will establish a new record for the fastest Indian to reach to 2000 runs. If he takes both the innings of the second Test to gather 97 runs, then he will join Dravid and Sehwag in the list.
He has three Test matches to match Gavaskar's record.
Jaiswal has been in a stunning run of form since making his Test debut in 2023. He hit a century on his Test debut in West Indies and has now scored tons in his maiden Test outings in England and Australia as well.
Jaiswal Test stats
Jaiswal has 1903 runs in only 20 Test matches in which he has batted in 38 innings. The left-hander averages 52.86 and has a strike rate of 65.44. He already has five centuries and half-centuries to his name in the traditional format.
Jaiswal was the second fastest Indian to 1000 Test runs. The left-hander reached the milestone in his 16th innings. Only Vinod Kambli had reached 1000 runs earlier than him in 14 Test innings.
Jaiswal in India vs England 1st Test
The 23-year-old Jaiswal scored a superb 101 in the first innings he batted in England in Test cricket. However, the youngster failed in the second innings as India lost the first Test by five wickets.
While his bat fired, Jaiswal had a terrible outing in the field as dropped multiple catches, some of them really easy, which cost India dearly in the game.
