Jannik Sinner dispatched Luca Nardi in straight sets to get his Wimbledon campaign off to a strong start.

Sinner came into the season's third major on the back of two defeats in the space of three matches, but never looked likely to slip up against his fellow Italian on Tuesday.

Having shrugged off a touch of rustiness in the opening set, Sinner hit his stride to triumph 6-4 6-3 6-0, getting the job done with the minimum of fuss.

It was in stark contrast to the start made by Sinner's rival Carlos Alcaraz, who needed five sets to overcome 38-year-old Fabio Fognini on Monday.

"I'm very happy to come back here, it's such a special place for me," said Sinner. "Playing against another Italian, it's very unfortunate for us, but one of us had to go through.

"It's a new tournament, new chances, new challenges. One opponent at a time. If you don't enjoy playing on this court, I don't know where you'd enjoy playing."

Sinner was not the only men's seed to start strong on day two, with Alex De Minaur beating Roberto Carballes Baena 6-2 6-2 7-6 (7-2).

Data Debrief: No time for friends

Sinner is now 15-0 against Italian opponents at ATP-Tour level – he is just the third player in the Open Era to win his first 15 matches against his compatriots, along with Bob Hewitt and Guillermo Vilas.

The 23-year-old has now won 25 grand slam matches. Since the ATP rankings were published in 1973, only Novak Djokovic (26) has achieved that many wins at the majors in fewer matches than Sinner (27).

Indeed, Sinner is now both the first Italian man in the Open Era and the first born in the 21st century to claim 75 match wins at grand slams.
